Diamonds Shape
Diamonds are cut into many different shapes. The shape is determined when the diamond is studied directly from above. Everything from traditional round cut to more modern cuts like hearts are described below, along with what factors you should consider in each shape.
Round
Round diamonds have brilliant cut and are the most popular in the jewelry industry. A round diamond with a brilliant cut gives you many alternatives if you are looking for a well-balanced diamond with the right proportions of cut, color and clarity. If you want to have the highest possible brilliance we recommend you choose a diamond with ideal or very good cut and ideal or very good symmetry.Princess
Princess cut diamonds are the second most popular after round diamonds. Princess cut diamonds are traditionally square but today they can also have a rectangular shape. Princess cut diamonds are very popular for engagement and wedding rings. Consider that the wrong color on this kind of diamond can be easily seen on the edges. If you are looking for a square princess cut diamond, have a look at ratio between 1-1.05. The diamond has a more visible rectangular shape at the ratio of 1.10 and higher.Emerald
Emerald cut is a type of step cut which yields a big upper facet showing the diamond’s clarity. If you choose a emerald cut diamond, we recommend that you choose a diamond with a lower number of inclusions (high clarity grade). This kind of diamond is perfect for a baguette cut. Emerald cut diamonds are traditionally rectangular, where the short sides can sometimes have different lengths - something which makes this diamond shape useful as a side stone in three-stone rings. If you are looking for a step cut diamond but square shaped, we recommend having a look at Asscher cut diamonds.Asscher
An asscher cut diamond is almost identical to an emerald cut diamond, except for the ratio. Asscher cut diamonds are rectangular while Emerlad cut diamonds are square. Like emerlads, Asscher cut diamonds show their full clarity. This is why we recommend choosing a diamond with only a few inclusions. You should also take into consideration that in slightly colored Asscher cut diamonds the color is more visible on the edges.Marquise
The shape of a marquise cut diamond is really impressive. It looks big in proportion to its carat when compared with other cuts. The diamond is brilliant cut and has therefore 57 facets. This diamond is perfect as a center stone in e.g. rings and it goes well with drop cut diamonds on the side. The shape of marquise cut diamonds makes the fingers look long and slim. Traditional marquise cut diamonds have a ratio between 1.75 and 2.25. Nowadays, however, it is relatively more popular with other proportions.Oval
An oval cut diamond looks like a round brilliant cut diamond but oval. If the oval cut diamond is used on a ring, it makes (like a navette cut diamond) the fingers look long and slim. The traditional ratio between length and width of an oval cut diamond is between 1.33 and 1.66.Radiant
The radiant cut diamond can be recognized by its smoothly polished edges. A radiant cut diamond goes well with baguette and round cut diamonds. Traditionally, radiant cut diamonds are square or almost square. Nowadays, however, it is even popular with more rectangular radiant cut diamonds. If you are looking for a square radiant cut diamond, check that the ratio is between 1-1.05. A little bit more of a rectangular shape can be achieved with a ratio of 1.10 and higher.Drop
The drop cut diamond has like other brilliant cut diamonds 57 facets. It goes well with many different types of jewelry and makes the fingers look long and slim if it is mounted on a ring. Traditionally, a drop cut diamond has a ratio between 1.45 and 1.75.Heart
A heart cut diamond is really unique because it looks like the most recognizable symbol of love. We recommend choosing a heart cut diamond which is completely colorless (D or E grade). In this kind of cut, the color can be more visible on the edges. A traditional heart cut diamond has a ratio between 0.90 and 1.10.Cushion
The cushion cut diamond is popular in the jewelry industry and has round edges and big open surfaces. We therefore recommend choosing a diamond with high clarity. Cushion cut diamonds can be both square and rectangular. If you are looking for a square cushion cut diamond, look for a ratio between 1-1.05. Diamonds with a ratio of 1.15 and higher have more rectangular shapes.
