Silver

Silver has the chemical symbol Ag, a density of 10.5 g/cm3 and a melting point of 962°C. Pure silver is an alloy consisting of at least 830 parts per thousand silver, and the remaining 17% usually includes copper. 830 parts per thousand silver is called Scandinavian silver and is used for example for silver cutlery. Jewelry often includes more silver, usually 925 parts per thousand.

Sterling silver

The silver commonly used for high quality jewelry is called sterling silver. All silver jewelry from Lamastone is made of sterling silver. The alloy consists of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. The reason the alloy is 7.5% copper is that native silver is too soft and therefore not strong enough to be used as jewelry.

Benefits of silver

The biggest advantage of silver is first of all the lower price in comparison to other metals. A necklace made of silver is significantly cheaper than one made of gold, platinum or palladium.

Tips on how to care for your silver

Silver can be cleaned with a cloth (a small part of a bed sheet is perfect) and some kind of jeweler’s rouge. Silver jewelry should not be worn while bathing in chlorinated water as the chlorine has a harmful effect on silver.
