Cultured pearl
Pearls can be cultured when the living tissue from another mollusk is inserted in the shell with a nacre ball, irritating the shell. Within a few days, the foreign tissue multiplies and builds a sack around the nacre ball. The culturing of the pearl has begun. This method of growing pearls was discovered in 1916. Pearls are created naturally when a mollusk is irritated by a little grain of sand or something similar. The grain is encapsulated and so a pearl is built.
